Why certification marks matter

A certification mark is more than a logo: it is the manufacturer's declaration that a product meets specific legal requirements and technical standards, independently confirmed by a recognized body where the law (or market practice) demands it. For industrial safety components such as Type 4 safety light curtains, marks answer four questions buyers should always ask:

  1. Can this product legally enter the market? (market access — mandatory marks)
  2. Is the safety claim independently verified? (type examination, listing, functional-safety reports)
  3. Will it survive an audit or an insurance claim? (traceability to standards and certificates)
  4. Does it match my machine's target markets? (one product, several marks)

Golden rule: never trust a mark on a datasheet alone — verify the certificate number in the issuing body's online database (see §7). Marks are routinely counterfeited.

Note on safety components: under the Machinery Regulation, safety components (including ESPE) are in Annex I Part B (higher-risk list) — conformity assessment may require EU type-examination by a notified body depending on the standards route used. This is why reputable light-curtain suppliers hold TÜV/DEKRA type-examination certificates alongside CE.

3. North America — USA & Canada

10. Buyer checklist for safety sensors

When evaluating a safety light curtain / ESPE / safety sensor for a machine:

  1. Safety rating: Type class (EN/IEC 61496: Type 2/3/4), PL (ISO 13849-1: b–e) and SIL (IEC 62061 / IEC 61508: 1–3) stated explicitly — e.g., "Type 4, PL e (Cat. 4), SIL 3".
  2. EU: CE DoC naming the directives/regulation and standards cited; NB/type-examination certificate number for ESPE.
  3. US/CA: NRTL mark (UL/ETL/CSA) with a searchable file number; FCC ID if wireless/radar.
  4. Other target markets: Giteki (JP), KC-EMC/KC radio (KR), EAC (EAEU), RCM (AU/NZ) as applicable.
  5. Certificate vs. datasheet: confirm the certificate number and issuing body, and that the product marking matches the certificate.
  6. Versions: standards editions (e.g., IEC 61496-1:2020, ISO 13849-1:2023, IEC 62061:2021) should be current — old editions indicate legacy designs.
